The Old Wellington Inn is one of Manchesters oldest buildings dating back to Tudor times when it was first built
around 1550, but only became a licenced house in 1830. It was originally in the
Shambles (an old word meaning butchers market) where there has been a pub or inn dating back to the 14th Century,
and was nearly demolished as part of the Arndale re-development in the 1970s, but was saved,
raised 15 feet and relocated into the new Shambles Square along with Siclairs Oyster Bar. The pub was saved the worst
of the effects of the 1996 bomb by the modern buildings which hemmed it in and was taken apart, re-located 300m nearer to the
Cathedral as part of the post-bomb regeneration and rebuilt piece by piece.
