Located on Gt Bridgewater St, across
from The Bridgewater Hall, and the G-MEX, The Britons Protection is a very
traditional pub which first opened in 1806 and the name indicates and
association with the local volunteers who aimed to resist a Napoleonic invasion. The exterior is a simple rendered
Georgian front while the interior was extensively re-modelled in the 1920s and
displays a lot of character with the extensive tiling and woodwork as well as
murals depicting the Peterloo Massacre in the passagway to the back rooms. There are still bell-pushes in the two
back rooms. There is a pleasant shady beer garden at the back.
